Hunger in the world : Over population or Over wasting ? Answer in 9 facts.

Hunger in the world is a well known topic, but there are so many different opinions that it’s not really clear when the arguments are close to reality or not. Is it that the planet is over populated ? Is there too many waste in our way of life ? Is it both ? Well, here are some facts (with sources mainly from NATO) that might lead us closer to reality :

There is 1.3 billion tones of food wasted per year in the world
50% of food wasting comes from Europe
40% of food purchased in USA isn’t even consumed
In Africa and Asia 6 to 11 Kilo of food per person are wasted each year while in North America and Europe 95 to 115 Kilo per person are wasted each year
There is 870 million persons that suffers of hunger in the world
There is 800 million persons touched by obesity in the world
There is 1.3 billion persons with over weight in the world
40 to 50% of food production in the world is wasted
25% of wasted food is enough to feed the 870 millions person suffering of hunger in the world

In conclusion, nature offers enough food to feed the entire planet, but our modern society based on consumption leads us to waste. Indeed, having an epidemic of hunger suffering on one side and an epidemic of obesity on the other side is quite an illustration of the current problem the world is facing. This without even being aware of it, indeed we are all educated to respect expiry date on the packaging for instance. The good news is that it depends on us so there is hope.
